Testing requirement
MEDICAL TEST
REQUIREMENTS
A clean family history (no history of cancer or other serious diseases)
No signs of alcohol or substance abuse by the candidate
The candidate must not be a smoker
All tests must come up with clean and normal results. Results that show no major evidence of major
diseases or disorders.
TESTING
BLOOD TEST
Blood pressure: An Candidate requires a blood pressure of 140/90 when in a sitting position
Screening for certain genetic conditions: e.g. cystic fibrosis or spinal muscular atrophy
Complete blood count: must meet the average amount.
URINE TEST
Amount of certain things:
o Acidity (pH): must come up with normal results. Abnormal results may indicate kidney or urinary tract disorders.
o Protein: must have low levels. Large amounts of protein may be due to kidney problems.
o Sugar, bilirubin, and ketosis: must be low. Their detection may be a sign of diabetes or liver damage.
EYE EXAMINATION:
A candidate requires 20/20 vision. 20/20 vision is the perfect vision and the candidate would not need glasses.
ARTHROSCOPY TEST (JOINTS):
The candidate must have healthy joints, and not have any signs of arthritis.
THORACOSCOPY TEST (LUNGS):
The candidate must not have asthma, and not have any breathing issues.
HYSTEROSCOPY TEST (UTERUS EXAMINATION
The candidate must be able to reproduce. They also test the men for sperm count and the shape of the sperm.
The sperm and the uterus must be healthy, to be able to produce a healthy child.
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM TEST:
The candidate should be free of any digestion diseases, such as Crohn’s disease.
LARYNGOSCOPY TEST (NOSE)
The candidate must have a healthy voice box, showing no signs of inflammation or laryngitis.
ESOPHAGOSCOPY TEST (ESOPHAGUS TEST):
The astronaut’s oesophagus must be healthy, and not show any signs of cancer.
